What is Public Relations?

Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.


How much are dues?

Dues are $65 for an entire year. If you pay in the fall, you will not have to renew until the following fall. Dues are paid entirely online through the PRSSA national website. Dues are collected twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring and must be paid by the deadline.

Why should I join?

Joining AU PRSSA is a great step towards developing your professional communications career. By joining PRSSA you will enhance your education by gaining exclusive access to events, leadership opportunities, scholarships, and awards. You will be able to develop your professional network by networking with 20,000 professionals in the industry and thousands of students just like you.

Additionally you will gain access to PRSSA’s internship and job boards as well as earn a discounted PRSA associate membership after you graduate.


Do I have to be a communications major to join?

No, our Chapter is open to all American University students. Graduate students and undergraduates of any major and any age are welcome to join.


What careers can I expect in this industry?

Working in PR can provide a variety of career opportunities. Former PRSSA members have gone on to work in sports, marketing, advertising, crisis PR, and non-profit PR. They’ve gone on to work for top agencies, in-house communications, embassies, political figures, government offices, corporations, and special interests. Name an industry and you’ll find that they have some form of PR.
