February 4th was a rainy SuperBowl Sunday, but nothing dampened the spirits of our chapter, as we embarked on a service trip to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Greater Washington, DC. RMHC provides a home environment providing support and resources that help keep families together. From their website:
“Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children – a long time to be away or to divide a family. And, for children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support. A Ronald McDonald House provides a place for families to call home so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little to no cost.”
Families at the Ronald McDonald House are often exhausted from long trips to the hospital and difficult treatments. RMHC provides a home environment close to the hospital, to relieve the burden of traveling long distances. By preparing meals at RMHC, volunteers can further give relief by providing a hot, home-cooked meal for families.
Eight #AUPRSSA members headed to the Ronald McDonald House of DC to provide a meal for the visiting families. We prepped, diced, fried and boiled our way through the evening, working together to prepare a meal of teriyaki chicken & fried rice that was enjoyed by all.
Embarking on service experiences is an integral aspect of being a member of our chapter. AU PRSSA is not only bounded by a passion for our field, but with an understanding of the importance of making connections that go beyond networking to make meaningful impacts in our community. Our visit was so rewarding because we were able to provide tangible assistance and extra love to those who need it most.
