On a rainy Wednesday night, students attending the “Inside Access from a Recruiter’s Perspective” open chapter meeting for AU PRSSA shuffled into Mary Graydon Center, umbrellas and all. The speaker at hand was an inspiring and captivating AU alumnus, Jaci Pulice, who joined us to talk about how to make job applications “shine.” As a Senior Corporate Recruiter for Beacon Hill Staffing Group based in Boston, MA, Jaci spoke with us about the value of learning from experiences in order to gain a full range of knowledge for future jobs. As she began to speak about her past experiences being an AU Orientation Leader, she instantly grabbed my attention since I was an AU Orientation Leader this past summer.

Just like the rest of the room, I was in awe of her drive and willingness to share some of her best tips and tricks with us. She spoke about the importance of resumes, cover letters, networking, social media such as LinkedIn, temping jobs, and how to showcase your personality to benefit both the qualifications of a job as well as the culture of a workplace. The most powerful takeaway advice was to make new connections and reach out to those who have experience. This starts by sending a quick and concise message via email or LinkedIn and grabbing coffee with them. During the meet up, ask many questions about their experience and career journey. Jaci emphasized the significance of learning from those in the field you’re interested in and using your connections wisely.

Overall, the information Jaci presented was very helpful and it was exciting to see an AU Alumni have such success post-graduation. Jaci is one of the reasons why I’m proud to go to American University and why I love AU PRSSA for bringing such talented speakers to our meetings.
