What is Public Relations?
Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.
When do meetings take place?
Chapter meetings are held biweekly, on campus on Wednesdays at 8:15 pm. If you are a member and are not receiving updates from AU PRSSA, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to get access to our Facebook group and email list serve. If you are not a member, please email email@example.com with inquiries on how to join.
How much will this cost me?
Dues are $70 and good for the entire year. Therefore, if you pay in the fall of 2017 you will not have to renew until the fall of 2018. Dues can be paid by cash or check. See our membership page for more information.
How do I join?
American University students can join AU PRSSA at the beginning of each semester. Dues are $70 and are good for the entire year. Therefore, if you pay in the spring semester of 2018 you will not have to renew until the spring semester of 2019.

Why should I join?

What is AU PRSSA?
AU PRSSA is American University’s award-winning chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) which is the student division of the national professional Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) organization.
Do I have to be a communication major?
AU PRSSA is open to all American University students. Graduate students and undergraduates of any major and any age are welcome to join.

Can I attend meetings if I’m not a member?
Our meetings are closed to members only EXCEPT for the first few weeks of the semester. Once the deadline for dues has passed, non-members are not allowed at meetings. If you have a special circumstance, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
What happens when I graduate?
After you graduate you will have a life-long network of like-minded young professionals to help guide you in your continued professional development. Additionally, you will be given the opportunity to join PRSA as an associate member for a discounted price of $60 for up to two years following graduation.
What careers can I expect in this industry?
Working in PR can provide a variety of career opportunities. Former PRSSA members have gone on to work in sports, marketing, advertising, crisis PR, and non-profit PR. They’ve gone on to work for top agencies, in-house communications, embassies, political figures, government offices, corporations, and special interests. Name an industry you’ll find they have some form of PR.
What leadership opportunities exist?
Our executive board consists of a president, vice president, events director, publicity director, membership director, diversity and inclusion director, website director, finance and fundraising director, and firm director. Executive board members are elected at the end of the academic year. All positions are open to all PRSSA members.
In addition students may also take on leadership roles by planning events, getting involved with Eagle Communications, contributing to the AU PRSSA blog, assisting in the planning of national and regional conferences, and participating in PRSSA competitions.

I’m pretty busy. How involved do I have to be?
You can be involved with PRSSA as much or as little as you want. Students who attend meetings and events get much more out of their experience but there is no time expectation of our members.
What benefits will I get with membership?
By paying dues you become an active member of PRSSA. This gets you access to exclusive national events through PRSSA including National Conference, Regional Conferences, and National Assembly. Additionally, PRSSA members have exclusive access to industry news, PRSSA job and internship boards, and a network of more than 20,000 professionals.
